Oh, what a bridge!

Bridges fascinate me. For many reasons. But particularly because they are constructed to provide passage, where it might otherwise be difficult or impossible. The nature of the terrain, the function of the bridge, and the materials used all come together to create structures that can be seen from far far away.

The Penang Bridge (the shorter one of the bridges) is 13.5 kilometres long. It was opened in 1985. On the 15 Dec 2024, the bridge will welcome lots of runners for the region’s annual marathon.

The Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge is 29 kilometres long (the longest I have crossed is the Vasco de Gama Bridge in Lisbon at 17 kms), so it’s a record breaker for me. It is in fact the longest bridge in Southeast Asia!

I took a cab across both bridges this morning. The driver was rather irritated that I had no destination in mind & amused at my enthusiasm. I loved it.
